Boone Powell, FAIA

Boone Powell is Chairman of the Board of Ford, Powell & Carson, Inc. and the Director of the Architectural Division. Powell joined O'Neil Ford & Associates in 1960 and became a partner in 1967.

Powell holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Texas and a Master's Degree in City and Regional Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a registered architect in New York as well as Texas.

Powell has made many memorable contributions to the field of architecture over the past 40 years. He has been involved in a broad range of architectural projects, including preservation and adaptive re-use, inner-city planning and development, campus master planning, transportation planning and urban design.

He served as Principal-in-Charge for Ford, Powell & Carson of the Texas State Capitol Restoration and Master Plan. He directed the preliminary planning of Hemisfair '68 and was the Project Architect for the 750-foot Tower of the Americas. He served as Principal-in-Charge of the extension of San Antonio's Riverwalk into RiverCenter Mall, as well as the Paseo del Alamo Pedestrian Walkway and Water Gardens, which linked the Alamo to the Riverwalk through the atrium lobby of the Hyatt Hotel. He has directed numerous restoration and adaptive re-use projects in Galveston's historic Strand District, as well as Pier 21, a nearby mixed-use, waterfront project. He has been involved since 1961 in the planning and architecture of the Skidmore College campus in Saratoga Springs, New York. He was instrumental in developing the original and updated master plans for the University of Texas at San Antonio, and directed the design of the new Business Building at the University.

Powell has been recognized more than 35 times for his work by local, state and national design awards. Nearly half of these awards have been earned in the last decade, which is testimony to the continued growth of Powell's design skills.

Powell is a fellow in the American Institute of Architects, past chairman of the AIA Committee on Design, and past President of the Texas Society of Architects and the San Antonio chapter of the AIA. He has remained an active member of these organizations and belongs to several municipal, university and private boards, councils and organizations as well. Powell has recently been appointed a member of the United States General Services Administration's National Register of Peer Professionals.
