Pier 21 and Harbor House Hotel
Galveston, Texas

Completed 1993

As part of the Mitchell family's redevelopment in and near the Strand Historical District in Galveston, this 53,000 square foot hotel and marina complex provides a much needed link between the waterfront of the Port of Galveston, the adjacent historical district, and the Texas Seaport Museum.

The design of the mixed use commercial development includes spaces for shopping and dining, a 42 room hotel, and waterfront support facilities for small boats including a nine slip marina. The project also includes an interpretive theatre and a half-acre park designed for use during Galveston's many festivities. Context was the key to selecting durable materials with an industrial flavor: heavy timber framing, corrugated cement roof and wall panels, brick sidewalks and streets, and wood plank floors and porches.
