Sunset Station Restoration and Renovation
San Antonio, Texas

Completed 1998

Ford, Powell & Carson was retained by a public/private venture to completely restore the city's old Southern Pacific railroad depot, a 1902 load-bearing brick and stucco building that is listed on the National Register for Historic Places. The depot was the San Antonio stop for the Sunset Limited, a train that linked New Orleans and Los Angeles. The restored depot houses an entertainment and retail complex with music venues, restaurants, and specialty shops.

The extensive interior restoration included repairing or replacing ornamental plaster, terrazzo floors, and decorative woodwork. Exterior restoration work included the replication and replacement of missing ornamental cast stone, the replication of a missing stained glass window, and restoration of the clay tile roof, the doors and windows, and the stucco facade. The site was completely redeveloped to include new underground utilities, a new fountain, decorative paving, and a new outdoor pavilion for large music performances.
