Tiendas del Rio
RiverCenter Mall Turning Basin
San Antonio, Texas

Completed 1989

The RiverCenter is a unique shopping mall and mixed use project which opens onto the San Antonio River. The City of San Antonio retained Ford, Powell & Carson and a local engineering firm to design the public amenities portion of the project. A public-private venture, the Tiendas del Rio project included the design of a major new turning basin in the heart of the retail development, surrounded and crossed by a lacework of pedestrian pathways and bridges. The river terminates at the basin, which features an outdoor garden room and entertainment island with planted terraces at its center.
