Tremont House Hotel
Galveston, Texas

Restoration, Adaptive Reuse, Landscape Architecture, 1986

This 19th century wholesale dry goods emporium was transformed into a small luxury hotel. Inside, a new atrium provides space for an airy lobby and bar covered by a glass roof. The 124 guest rooms feature 14 foot ceilings, hardwood floors, ceiling fans, brass hardware and elaborate millwork. Some of the guest rooms overlook the atrium through French windows with wrought iron balconies.

The first floor was raised above the Galveston flood plain. Ground level exterior arcade openings were filled with wood and glass panels which match the original doors in proportion and style. The new fourth floor houses additional guest rooms under a reconstructed mansard roof.
