The Light Building

scroll

Renovations included removing the windowless south wall that faced downtown and an interior steel mezzanine to open up the building, revealing the original 1929 Historic Lobby and original Print Room, creating a light-filled office space. Black brick was used to anchor the new south wall, and a glass curtainwall maximizes natural light and views downtown from the upper levels. Sections of the existing reinforced concrete mezzanine floor slab were removed, and open railings, a suspended staircase and wood slat display walls were added to create a layering of the space.

Circulation and support spaces were defined by D’Hanis clay tile walls. The exterior black brick walls were brought into conference and reception areas. A glass wall system used at the two-story conference areas, and suspended wood stick ceilings that cover the mechanical ductwork creates continuity throughout the spaces. Collaborative workstations and central worktables at the Studio create a dynamic element under the circular LED Lighting.  The Conference and Breakrooms along the south wall allow natural light, access outside, and views to downtown. The Historic Lobby used encaustic tile flooring and is anchored with a custom two-story bookcase wall with Mezzanine walkway to define and clearly separate this area from the studio area. The Library Bookcase displays hand-crafted artifacts and materials along with the office library books.
