Caldwell County Courthouse

The 1893 Caldwell County Courthouse stands as a distinguished example of Second Empire architecture in Texas, defined by its prominent mansard roofs, ornamental metalwork, and carefully composed stone façades. First completed in 2000, FPC’s exterior restoration returned clarity and material integrity to the building through the repair of limestone and sandstone masonry, restoration of historic wood windows and doors, and extensive work across the complex roofscape. Lost slate tiles, iron cresting, ornamental railings, and decorative elements at the central clock tower were reinstated using historic photographs, physical evidence discovered in the attic, and detailed paint analysis that guided the recreation of the original color palette.

The work required close coordination between preservation expertise and technical integration. Structural stabilization within the attic supported reconstruction of the slate mansard roof and restoration of flat and standing seam metal elements. Lost balcony features and ornamental railings were replicated based on archival documentation, strengthening the courthouse’s original composition. A concealed HVAC system was sensitively introduced within the roof to support contemporary performance while preserving the building’s historic character.

Site improvements balanced accessibility with preservation through the introduction of a new accessible ramp at the north entrance, achieved with a light metal bridge that lightly spans the historic stone steps, maintaining their visibility and material continuity. Building upon this foundation of stewardship, FPC has been engaged to prepare a comprehensive master plan in accordance with Texas Historical Commission standards. Scheduled for completion in 2026, the plan will guide future phases of restoration and position the courthouse to qualify for funding through the Texas Courthouse Preservation Program, ensuring this civic landmark continues to serve Caldwell County with dignity and continuity for generations to come.
