Dan Flavin Installation
Chinati Foundation
Marfa, Texas

Art Installation and Interior Design, 2000

The project consists of six army barracks buildings on the former Fort Russell site that were conceived as an art project by the noted minimalist artist, Dan Flavin. Flavin used standard fluorescent light fixtures in a range of color lamps to create a variety of light "paintings" that work in a series.

All of the buildings in the installation have identical interior cores. The light fixtures are used to create unique environments within each space. Ford, Powell & Carson created a design that implemented the artist's vision and concept through careful restoration and stabilization of the abandoned structures in a unique collaborative effort with the artist's representative, the contractor, and the Chinati Foundation.

All buildings were adapted to meet handicapped accessibility codes, and special design features were used to create the series of parallel tunnels that open into the flanking galleries typical in each building. Interior walls were separated from the structure to allow for movement and to create a pristine shell for the reflected light.
