Strand Street Theater
Galveston, Texas

Restoration and Renovation, 1993

The Strand Street Theatre is a privately owned, 9,000 square foot theatre located on Mechanic Street across from the Tremont House Hotel. The Strand Street Company raised funds from a number of private and corporate donors and retained Ford, Powell & Carson to develop a renovation master plan for the theatre in 1983. When necessary financing was secured nine years later, the theatre was restored, and an adjacent non-historic infill building was demolished and replaced by a new building shell.

The theatre seats approximately 200 patrons. The single-story auditorium was transformed into a two-story space by removing most of the second floor. Portions of the second floor were preserved for balcony seating, a control booth, and a future children's theatre. The stage is unflown and is rigged for theatre lighting, and new sidelighting trees were added to the side walls. Theatre seating was replaced by new seating with foldaway tablet arm chairs so that the theatre can be used as a presentation facility for the Tremont House Hotel.
