U.S. Long Distance Corporate Headquarters
San Antonio, Texas

Interior Design, 1991

The interiors for this corporate headquarters were designed to reflect the cutting edge nature of U.S. Long Distance's business. Ford, Powell & Carson's interior design team increased the apparent space of the office by using variable transparency -- rooms can be combined or separated to create large or small spaces. This is especially apparent in the reception area, where the board room serves as an extension of the reception area through the innovative use of custom designed door leaves which fold into the columns.

The individuality of the offices was enhanced by custom designed secretarial reception desks, tables, and free standing plastic laminate and glass stepped elements which serve as space dividers between functional areas. The initial contract was for a single story, 18,000 square foot space, but the owner subsequently expanded this to include two additional office floors for a total of 54,000 square feet.
